Page 4 of 8 Color has always been fascinating to me. Lining up my markers in the color of a rainbow was something that came naturally to me. In school, not surprisingly, I excelled at art. I experimented with many different types of media including charcoal pencil, acrylics and even pottery. Although I longed to attend the Art Center College of Design in California after graduating, our family just couldn’t afford it. So my first year of college was spent at the University of Kansas where I majored in art and design. I learned a lot, but due to expenses and also my desire to experience life in another country, I decided to become an Au Pair (nanny) in Norway after my first year of college. That did prove to be a wonderful experience, but I was more homesick than I thought I would be so I decided to shorten my year long commitment to six months. Much to my parent’s dismay I did not return to Nebraska, but instead moved to Maryland so that I could live close to my boyfriend at the time, who I’d met in high school in Omaha. He was attending the Naval Academy in Annapolis. Working three jobs for the next nine months and living with other Academy girlfriends, enabled me to establish residency in Maryland. I then attended the University of Maryland in College Park for my remaining three years of college. I received a full scholarship my last two years based on my art portfolio at the time, which was an answer to prayer and helped me to complete my entire schooling without taking out any loans. In 1993 I graduated magna cum laude with a BA in advertising design.
